Porpoise lessons use a station-based model called SwimAmerica.
Why the SwimAmerica program?
SwimAmerica was developed by the American Swim Coaches Association to address two large issues in the aquatic community: (1) swimmers were joining swim teams without the basic swim skills needed to be successful and more importantly, (2) the rate of drowning among children was far too high.
The lack of consistently available, high-quality swim instruction during and post COVID has only intensified both of these issues. As lovers of the sport and members of the community, we are committed to do our part to curb these trends.
SwimAmerica's stations have a narrow focus and are logically progressive. All the swimmers at a station are working on the same skill - they learn it, they practice it and once they can demonstrate mastery, they move on-- it is a goal oriented and self-paced- no waiting until the end of the session to move up or waiting for a classmate to work on something they already know how to do. We feel this experience of progression creates a sense of competence and confidence in our swimmers.
What are the stations?
Check out the SwimAmerica website for more information about the program’s philosophy and pre-school and school- age approach that we will be using.
Note about bubbles/floatation devices:
We will not be using bubbles in our lessons so that the children learn how their bodies naturally move and float in the water. This builds confidence, proper technique and real independence. Safety is always our top priority. All lessons are closely monitored by an on-deck supervisor as well as instructor and have very low student to instructor ratios in initial stations (2 students:1 instructor). We use gentle, hands-on support and gradual skill progressions so children build the strength and skills they need to swim. We have swim platforms in the pool that allow the swimmers to stand.
Please note- swimmers must be fully potty trained to participate- no swim diapers are allowed.
Assessments happen during a students first class or at a separate designed date by the club. Click here for more information on what to expect.
