Portland Porpoises Swim Groups

Bronze

Ages: 10 and Under
Workouts per week: 2-3
Duration of Program: Seasonal or Yearly

This program seeks to engage the younger swimmer in the sport of competitive swimming. Stroke mechanics, including proper body position and streamlining; and skill development, including starts, are the major focus. Swimmers also learn lane etiquette.
Silver

Ages: 11 and Under
Workouts per week: 3-4
Duration of Program: Seasonal or Yearly

Swimmers at this level are encouraged to compete in local meets. Further development of the four competitive strokes and their related skills is pursued. Swimmers are introduced to the pace clock and begin development of their aerobic base. The goal of the silver swimmer is to complete all four strokes and the individual medley in a competitive situation legally. We celebrate best times and personal improvement. There is no attendance commitment at this level.
Gold

Ages: 11- 13 years
Workouts per week: 6
Duration of Program: Seasonal or Yearly

This program is appropriate for the middle school and early high school swimmer who wants to become involved in the sport of competitive swimming. A seasonal plan for development is followed that includes early season stroke and skill development, mid-season aerobic base development and later season racing development. Swimmers use meets to test their seasonal development and are encouraged to attend as many in-season meets as possible. The Championship meet is the culmination of all the hard work throughout the season and should be high on the priority list. Swimmers are expected to attend a minimum of 6 workouts per week beginning in November as this group is focused on a seasonal training plan.
Varsity

Ages: 14 and Older
Workouts per week: 5 in off season and 3 during the season
Duration of Program: Seasonal or Yearly

This program is appropriate for the middle school or high school swimmer who wants to become involved in the sport of competitive swimming. A seasonal plan for development is followed that includes early season stroke and skill development, mid-season aerobic base development and later season racing development. We support swimmers swimming on their middle school and high school teams with extra workouts during the season and with a full workout schedule in the off season months.
