The Portland Porpoise Swim Club was formed by the City of Portland Recreation Department in the fall of 1989 as a program within the Aquatics Division. Since then it has become a private swimming club, run by a committed and energetic parent board. PPSC has evolved from a club that had winning in Maine as a vision, to providing the most extensive program in the area.
Our youngest swimmers not only learn basic movements in the water such as body position and feel of the water, but also enjoy the fun of the team membership. Social skills, sportsmanship and love of swimming is the focus of this group.
Our mid level swimmers learn to apply the basic skills in an initial level competitive environment. The primary focus of this group is technique development.
Our elite groups focus on racing strategy, training ownership, and advanced training techniques. We have several Masters swimmers working out with us in the mornings, many of whom swim solely for fitness.
Many of our high school athletes represent their school on swim teams and are the school champions. Our athletes have not only won Maine State Championships in the past, but are preparing for swimming at regional, college, national and international levels. PPSC has sent swimmers to college on full scholarships (both athletic and academic). Olympic Gold Medalist Ian Crocker grew up swimming with the Porpoises prior to taking his sport to the highest level.
The ultimate goals of PPSC is to promote swimming and to encourage swimmers to be successful at their chosen level. Please contact us for more information on our club and how it can help you develop healthy behaviors and a lifelong love of swimming.
